"This month I've selected pieces that stopped me in my tracks — each one with a story worth telling."
Nine hand-stamped sterling silver conchos with butterfly spacers, each set with a single natural turquoise cabochon. At 312 grams this belt commands a room. Provenance traceable to a 1960s trading post. A once-in-a-collection piece.
Zuni fetish carvings are small, hand-carved figures — typically animals — made from stone, shell, antler, wood, or other natural materials. Rooted in centuries of Zuni tradition, they are believed to house a living spirit capable of providing protection, healing, guidance, and strength to their keeper. The care given to a fetish is thought to be directly proportional to the protection it offers.
Materials & Symbolism: Prized materials include turquoise (spiritual purity), jet, coral, shell, and serpentine. Contemporary carvers now source materials globally. Key symbolic elements include the heartline (representing the spirit’s breath and life force), an offering bundle (gift to the universe), cornmeal (which feeds the spirit), and a fetish pot (the fetish’s home).
Sacred vs. Commercial: Historically carved only for ceremonial use and blessed by a medicine man, true fetishes remain sacred and stay within the Zuni village. Pieces made for sale are more accurately called carvings. This distinction has grown over the past century as commercial interest expanded. The heartline itself is a relatively modern addition, becoming popular in the 20th century.
Caring for a Fetish: Fetishes should be treated with respect — fed cornmeal and adorned with offerings such as small stones or feathers. In return, the spirit is believed to guide its keeper and provide the healing or strength they seek.

Each mine produces turquoise with a distinct color, matrix, and character. Provenance matters β it tells the stone's origin story.
Hallmarks are the artist's signature stamped into the metal. Learning to read them is key to authenticating Native American jewelry.
A beloved specialty of our collection β marcasites are iron pyrite cut and faceted into sparkling silver-grey stones set in sterling silver.
Vintage and Native American jewelry sizing can differ from modern standards. Here's how to measure for a perfect fit.
Proper care, wear, and storage keeps your pieces beautiful for generations. Your mantra for fine jewelry should be, “Last on, first off.”
Native American (particularly Zuni) fetishes are carved animals or figures believed to contain a spirit offering protection, healing, or success in hunting. Historically, they are small, stone-carved, and often adorned with arrowheads or prayer bundles.
Every piece from My Mother's Jewelry Box comes with a signed Certificate of Authenticity documenting the artist, nation, stone type and mine origin, metal content, approximate date, and provenance chain.

She wanted to see each person’s face when they received their jewelry — and tell them the story behind every piece.
Just because our family wouldn’t want this beautiful jewelry, some other family could enjoy them for many years — and pass them on.
The idea for My Mother’s Jewelry Box began when I was helping my mother sort her jewelry after my father passed away. She was deciding which items she wished to share with each grandchild — and she had decided to present them in person, before she passed away. My mother wanted to see each person’s face when they received their jewelry, then tell them the story of how and where she got a particular piece, and, most importantly, see her grandchildren enjoy them while she was still alive.
We talked and laughed — and cried a little bit, too — and eventually had most things organized. But there were several items that she felt none of her grandchildren would want. These were still beautiful pieces of jewelry, but they were either too big, or too small, or too contemporary, or too vintage for our family members.
Just because our family would not want this beautiful jewelry, some other family could enjoy them for many years — and then pass them on to their own children and grandchildren.
Euréka!
My Mother’s Jewelry Box was born.
My mother and I will share our favorite jewelry — necklaces, pins, earrings, watches, rings, and bracelets — lots of bracelets!! Mom loves all things Sterling, so most items here are 0.925 or Sterling Silver. Some of her “fun” pieces are not Sterling and will be noted. We have many styles with many stones — turquoise, lapis, larimar, topaz, amethyst, and pearls to name a few — but her favorites are marcasites.
We hope you enjoy our selection, and love the pieces that you choose, as much as we have. Wishing you and your future generations many years to enjoy them together.
When archaeologist Howard Carter first peered into the tomb of King Tutankhamen, he was asked what he could see, and he replied, "Wonderful things!"
A Ring. A Mother. A Daughter.
I received my first piece of heirloom jewelry on my 16th birthday. My mother gave me a ring that had belonged to her mother. I wore that ring every day until I gave it to my daughter on her 16th birthday.
My mother has been interested in antiques, especially sterling silver — flatware, hollowware, and jewelry. Over the last four decades, we have wandered through numerous antique shows and shops with me acting as her "picker." I would browse ahead of my mother, choose items for her to approve or decline — and sometimes find one for myself. Thus began my interest in beautiful objets d’art and jewelry.
I have retired after a 30-year career as a Pediatric Ophthalmologist, so I find myself once again with enough “free time” to explore previous interests. I am grateful to still be able to share these experiences with my mother, my daughter, and you.
I hope that you will also find many wonderful things as you peer into the pages of My Mother’s Jewelry Box.
Enjoy!
Where it all began — a ring passed down with love and memory.
Four decades wandering antique shows, discovering beautiful things.
A new generation carrying the ring — and the tradition — forward.
